Travertine is our key product and a material we specialise in. Although you may sometimes hear travertine referred to as ‘travertine limestone’ or ‘travertine marble’, it’s technically neither.
So what is it? Well, it’s a terrestrial sedimentary rock from Italy, backed by an impressive architectural history. Travertine has been used in construction since Ancient Roman times; it’s created some of the most beautiful historical buildings in the world. With a long history – travertine has been used in construction for more than 2,000 years – it’s a popular application in architecture, used for floors, stairs and paths, and is particularly predominant in European architecture.
Both durable and long lasting, travertine forms when calcium carbonate from within the ground water is deposited on the earth’s surface via natural springs. Travertine has become the most-used stone in the building industry today. This elegant natural stone can be used to pave floors and walls, as well as paths and patio areas. It can be carved into stairs, water features and much, much more.
Putting aesthetics aside, travertine has many benefits. It’s easy to repair, easy to keep clean, and because it doesn’t absorb heat, it’s an ideal choice for outdoor paving, indoor flooring and pool areas. And as long as it’s properly installed and sealed, travertine requires very little maintenance and should last for many, many years. And it’s an affordable investment that won’t break the bank.
Travertine is available in a variety of colours, including white, cream, grey and coral red. It is characterised by its distinctively porous appearance, which is caused by the bubbling of carbon dioxide during its formation. These pores can either be filled or unfilled, to create either a natural or smooth appearance.
As with all natural rocks, the formation of travertine can be idiosyncratic. For this reason, we encourage our customers to come and examine their order direct from the crates to ensure that it meets their expectations, both in terms of shade and quality.
Available honed and filled, in tumbled and unfilled finishes, our premium product range includes first grade travertine floor and wall tiles, travertine pavers, travertine pool coping, step treads and handpicked stone for dry stone walls.
